London’s conservative MPs have urged Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to back a new scheme for car clubs designed to provide more parking spaces in the capital.
Similar to the ‘Boris-Bike system, the plans will look to ensure that more spaces are made available for car sharing clubs.
It is hoped this will not only make car clubs a more attractive proposition for those looking to travel around London, but that it will also help to ease congestion and boost air quality.
Keith Prince, the GLA Conservative’s Transport spokesman has released a report detailing how the city could do more for car-sharing clubs.
He claims that many car clubs operate policies that require cars to be returned to where they were picked up from, as there is a lack of alternative parking spaces.
Mr Prince also draws on evidence which suggests that one car club vehicle can help to take 13.4 other vehicles off the road, reducing congestion in the process.
“It’s easy to envision a future in London where very few people choose to own a car and they are instead used like Boris Bikes, with people picking them up and dropping them off in different parts of the capital,” he explained.
Adding that a limited number of parking spaces is a barrier to car club growth, Mr Prince urged the Mayor to consider the opportunities that could come with including spaces as part of new developments.
He claims that making more space available for car clubs, coupled with incentives like the scrappage scheme could help to make London’s drivers think twice about driving their own vehicles in the capital.
