A leading alpine sports travel operator has hailed the start of the ski season as the best in living memory following a record-breaking start to 2018.
Ski Solutions is on course to increase its full year revenues by around 18%, and has said last minute interest in ski holidays has been the driving force behind the growth.
In the second week of January, there was a 21% increase in interest when compared to the same time last-year, comfortably breaking the company’s all-time biggest sales week.
Despite there being heavy snow in the Alps, Ski Solutions believes the 2017/18 season has had one of the best starts in living memory.
Earlier this month, storms and heavy snow threatened to cause frustration for travellers as ski resorts across Europe closed for safety reasons.
The popular resort of Zermatt was left inaccessible for 48 hours following heavy snow, while the emergency services in the region continue to monitor for avalanche risks.
Avalanche expert Henry Schniewind said: “The avalanche danger this week is directly related to a) the total accumulation of snow; b) the even larger amounts of snow added by wind in many places; and c) the rise and fall of the rain/snow altitude limit.”
Ski Solutions has seen a high number of both skiers and snowboarders returning to book second and third trips to make the most of the favourable conditions.
Due to the large snowfall, there is likely to be a good cover of snow this season, lasting well into March and April.
Abta – the UK’s largest travel association – released a report late last year which revealed that 1.75 million Brits were expected to enjoy a ski holiday this season.
If you’re considering a ski holiday this year, don’t forget to get a quote for specialist travel insurance to ensure you’re covered on the slopes.
