Brits are set to spend £2.2 billion on holidays during the festive season this year, with research from America Express showing that one in seven people are planning a break.
Those who do travel abroad are expected to spend an average of £457 each, while those taking a trip within the UK will spend £255 each.
Just over a quarter of travellers have plans to visit their friends and family abroad during the Christmas holidays, while 22% booked a break to experience the festive season in a different location.
More than 15% of the 2,000 respondents revealed that they are planning a break to escape the festive period because it can become frantic.
American Express director Jenny Cheung said: “Many Brits are choosing to make the most of their time over Christmas by celebrating further afield, whether that’s heading to an exotic destination or enjoying another part of the UK.”
To follow the research, America Express also provided tips to travellers to ensure those heading on holiday enjoy their break.
When planning a trip, Brits are encouraged to plan other activities, such as restaurants, tours or visits to tourist attractions in advance in order to bag good deals.
Other tips include, booking travel early and planning a shopping trip to ensure any Christmas shopping is completed long before the big day.
The research from American Express coincides with findings from MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, which found that 13 million Brits were planning a winter break this year.
Travellers indicated that the main reasons they were going away during the festive period was to relax in a warm climate, but also to escape from spending time with extended family members.
If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this Christmas, make sure you organise your travel insurance in advance.
