Getting lost on the road is costing business drivers more than four-and-a-half hours in time a year, according to new research from Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
The survey, which sought the opinions of Europeans who regularly drive for business, found that 78% of respondents have been lost on the road in the past month.
Despite satellite navigation systems being easily accessible, one in eight of respondents revealed that they had been lost for over 45 minutes, whilst one in 20 admitted they had been lost for at least two hours every month.
Being lost can have a detrimental effect on a business traveller’s productivity, making them late for meetings, more stressed and much more likely to miss deadlines, according to the study.
Of the 2,000 business drivers surveyed – who came from countries including the UK, Ireland, Germany, France and Spain – just over half admitted to being lost because they were not paying sufficient attention.
Around 30% got lost because they decided to ignore their satnav in search of quicker routes because of congestion, whilst 27% went the wrong way because of directions from a passenger.
Perhaps the worst of all, one in ten drivers admitted to running out of petrol when they were lost, with 43% revealing they failed to check to see if they had enough fuel before departing – as a result of getting lost, 19% were forced to spend the night somewhere unplanned.
Rob Ingram, Director of Business Rental EMEA at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, said: “Our research shows that businesses may need to support drivers to ensure they really do have everything they need. Even with all the technology at our fingertips, getting lost while driving is still an issue for many business drivers, particularly those driving abroad and on roads they’re unfamiliar with.”
