Three quarters of travellers wrongly believe that standard travel insurance would cover their lost or stolen gadgets on holiday, new research claims.
With Brits opting to travel with more gadgets than ever before, research from Travel Insurance Explained found many are unaware of what is and what isn’t covered.
Kindles, tablets and iPhones are among the most popular gadgets to travel with, but many policies will not cover the full cost of finding a replacement unless it is under six months old, and even when this is the case, a replacement may not be free or even the same model.
Fiona Macrae, of Travel Insurance Explained, commented: “Our research highlights just how many are people are unclear as to what they would get back from their insurer if their phone, tablet or favourite electronic gadget was lost or stolen while on holiday.”
As a result, those heading away on holiday should look to take out a separate policy for their gadgets and make the relevant checks beforehand – such as knowing the maximum pay-out – to ensure they have the cover they need.
Trainline – the online train ticket retailer – previously released research that showed that more than a third (35%) consider the ability to use their gadgets before booking any travel or accommodation.
More than 40% of people feel as though their gadgets give them more control over their travel plans, while 18% keep all of their booking documents on their smartphone.
The research, which polled more than 2,000 people, shows that gadgets have become an important part of travelling, making it vital that holidaymakers think about getting the right cover in place to protect them.
