However, there are some destinations that are far better suited to those travelling alone, whilst others are ideal for a group of friends looking to have the time of their life.
Using its own data, Airbnb, has listed the destinations for solo travellers that are currently trending because of single-person home bookings.
5) Johannesburg, South Africa
Due to a number of regeneration projects, Johannesburg has become a hugely popular destination for travel bloggers. After around 20 years of decline, the city is finally smartening itself up at a rapid rate, and is introducing a host of new office developments and apartment buildings.
The urban neighbourhood of Maboneng is widely considered to be one of the most successful urban-renewal projects in the world and has become particularly popular among hipsters.
4) Playa Del Carmen, Mexico
If you have your heart set on picturesque beaches and white sands, thenPlaya Del Carmen in Mexico should be your destination of choice.
The sea is clear and the reefs offer divers and snorkelers the opportunity to see rays, moray eels, sea turtles and a variety of corals.
3) Cologne, Germany
Cologne is widely considered to be Germany’s cultural hub and for good reason, as it offers endless attractions and is most notable for its gothic cathedral that is worth the cost of a flight alone.
As a result, it is hardly surprising to see that this destination has increased in popularity by 142% among solo travellers.
2) Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Although it tends to be a little chaotic and extremely busy, the city offers a rewarding escape and gives travellers access to fascinating historical and cultural sights.
An increase of 146% in terms of popularity highlights the appeal it has to lone wolf travellers who are eager to experience the culture and unexplored wilderness just a few miles away.
1) Cancun, Mexico
Well-known for its offering during Spring Break, it is easy to overlook this destination as anything more. However, the white-sand beaches and delicious seafood restaurants make it a perfect choice to enjoy whilst travelling alone.
If you fancy exploring, take a trip to the Mayan ruins or do a spot of snorkelling in the crystal-clear sea.
