The growing popularity of Sweden as a holiday destination is showing no sign of slowing down, as the country reveals record breaking visitor numbers from UK travellers.
Figures from Visit Sweden show that UK traveller bed night stays reached a record breaking number of 857,570 in 2016, this is a 43% increase over the course of three years.
This growing interest in the country has resulted in the UK now being the fourth largest inbound tourism market for Sweden.
Gabriel Dorch, marketing manager for Visit Sweden UK, commented: “The simplicity and sense of wellbeing offered by the Swedish lifestyle appeals to UK travellers, and we have worked closely with trade partners to develop exciting tours and products reflecting this.”
UK tour operators and airlines have made a significant effort to meet the growing interest, with easyJet, Monarch and bmi regional all launching new air routes to the country in the last three months.
Whilst both easyJet and Monarch’s new routes will land in Stockholm, bmi regional’s service will land in Gothenburg – which is well renowned for its Dutch-style canals and natural parklands.
At the end of 2016, easyJet also launched a new route from London Gatwick to the region of Jämtland Härjedalen in northern Sweden, highlighting UK travellers thirst for off the beaten track experiences.
Tour operators have also developed the services they offer over the past few years, and Simply Sweden has launched a new product called Escape Little Sweden.
In an attempt to tap into the interest for shorter breaks, the tour operator aims to give travellers a glimpse into the culture of Sweden by taking them on tours through the countries little villages.
Visit Sweden is also leading the way by offering sustainable nature tourism experiences, and has invested significantly into the development of ecotourism products which will help maintain the country’s natural landscapes.
