Monte Restaurant in the old town of Rovinj has become the first in Croatia to be awarded a prestigious Michelin star. The most recent Michelin guide has included a restaurant in the country for the first time in a move that reflects the level of appeal to a growing number of visitors.
The restaurant was one of 33 in the country to be recognised by the world famous guide but the only one to receive a much-prized star award.
Michelin stars are given to relatively few establishments and mark out those selected as excelling across a range of services, not only in the quality of their food. A star can be the make or break reason for the success of a restaurant on the world stage.
The Istrian peninsula, formerly known as Histria, is the largest in the Adriatic Sea. The west coast is already famous for having stunning coves and pine forests and now the town of Rovinj has another reason to attract visitors. Already a favourite destination because of its beautiful waterfront and pastel coloured houses, the award winning Monte now takes its rightful place on the list.
As well as benefiting from a wonderful location, the Istrian peninsula has been a gourmet go-to destination for a long time. Food lovers from neighbouring Italy and Austria often drive the short distance to savour the region’s fine food and wines.
Italian visitors flock to the region due to it being home to some of the best pasta and risotto in Europe, as well as producing many superb olive oils.
Other delicacies include fresh Adriatic fish and seafood, a famous dried ham called prsut and many different types of hand crafted cheese.
The latest Michelin guide also featured 12 other restaurants in Istria, located in Novigrad, Porec, Livade, Zambratija, Bale, Brtonigla, Banjole and Rovinj.
If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your European Travel Insurance in advance.
