Timing is everything when it comes to securing the cheapest prices for flights and hotels in 2017, according to new analysis by travel search engine KAYAK.co.uk.
KAYAK has analysed data from millions of searches to find out that with very little planning, travellers can end up saving a lot of money.
Research shows that British travellers can make savings of up to 80% on flights to Europe and internationally by making their bookings at the right time.
The best deals for mid-haul flights can often be found just one or two months in advance, according to the research.
Flights to Faro in Portugal were 80% cheaper when booking just one month in advance, and similar savings can be made on a number of other destinations including Mallorca (75%), Tenerife (66%) and Rome (61%).
Despite this, the research shows that more forward planning is needed to find the best deals when it comes to destinations such as Reykjavik, Iceland, where booking five months in advance can mean savings of up to 61%.
In order to find the best deals on flights to popular long-haul destinations, it is best to wait until nearer the departure date.
For example, huge savings can be made on bookings to Orlando if travellers are willing to wait until just two months before departure to book as tickets are 41% cheaper, while travellers to Los Angeles can save up to 40%.
However, there are some exceptions – those wanting to visit New Zealand can secure the best deal if they book a trip to Auckland seven months before leaving, making a saving of up to 58%.
On all routes, both long and short, flying out in the middle of the week is the cheapest option, whilst the best departure and return days generally fluctuate between Tuesday and Thursday.
If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your specialist travel insurance in advance.
