London Heathrow has retained its title as Europe’s most connected airport, although Chicago O'Hare International ranked first globally.
Heathrow’s closest challenger to the top spot in Europe came from Frankfurt, Germany, according to the rankings calculated by air travel intelligence company OAG.
The second busiest airport in the world was the only UK airport to make it into both the European top ten and the overall top 50 global listing.
The airport came 15th in the global rankings, which are judged by looking at how many inbound and outbound flights are possible within a six-hour window.
John Grant, Senior Analyst at OAG, said: “For many years Heathrow has been the number one hub in Europe and that position remains solid despite the increasing competitive range of airports in Europe.”
Chicago O'Hare International took the top spot globally, beating out Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International in second and Dallas/Fort Worth International in third.
The rest of the top ten included Denver International; Charlotte Douglas International; Los Angeles International; Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta; Seattle – Tacoma International; San Francisco International and Phoenix Sky Harbor International in that order.
When it comes to international regions, Europe was the third biggest contender, containing 12% of the global share of megahub airports, followed by Latin America with 8% and the Middle East/Africa, with 2%.
Unsurprisingly, North America was responsible for the largest percentage of megahubs, responsible for just under half (46%) of the share by region, whilst Asia Pacific also ranked ahead of Europe, with 32%.
The Government recently gave the green light for Heathrow to develop its third runway, which is vital if it is going to remain as Europe’s most connected airport, according to Mr Grant.
