The global cruise market experienced a boom in 2015, with 22 million trips recorded according to a new survey.
Findings from the World Travel Monitor show that the cruise market grew by around 3% on the previous year.
It seems the opportunity to mix relaxation with sightseeing and exploring is a hugely attractive proposition for travellers, and in particular Europeans.
Europe has been found to be one of the most important source markets for the sector, taking up 32% of the market share.
Spain was found to be the most popular destination for cruises, with the Caribbean occupying second place and the only destination outside of Europe in the top five, finishing just ahead of Italy in third.
The tourism sector has also benefited from the amount of opportunities for tourists to spend money on a cruise, either in an on-board spa or whilst shopping.
Spending in the cruise market is significantly higher than in other sectors according to the survey –Europeans spent €107 euros per night on holiday trips in 2015 on average, compared to cruise tourists that spent more than double that amount, averaging €218.
When it comes to booking cruises, the internet is the more preferred option for Europeans as 60% booked in this way, although travel agencies still manage to attract more than the average number of cruise bookings.
While 25% of European holidaymakers end up booking via travel agencies, that figure rises to 42% in the cruise sector – much higher than any other holiday segment.
Traditionally, the cruise market has been occupied by those older than 45, however the amount of younger people going on cruises has continued to grow, with around 35% of European cruise tourists under the age of 45 in 2015.
