Qantas predicts that the airline will be able to deliver direct flights from Australia to London within a year, following delivery of new 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
The Australian airline is looking at direct flights between Perth and London as it plans to expand on its current network of routes.
Other potential routes include Sydney to Chicago and Melbourne to Dallas, due to the plane’s ability to fly longer distances – Dreamliners have 20% better fuel efficiency than regular 747 aircraft.
The 787-9 Dreamliner, built by Boeing, costs in the region of £200 million, however the price largely depends on each plane’s technical specifications and how many are bought at once.
Qantas aims to gradually replace all of its older Boeing 747s between 2018 and 2019, in order to ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place to handle the new planes.
According to Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, both international and domestic operations would need to be in the same terminal, including customers and immigration, in order for the new plans to be implemented.
The acquisition of the aircraft is a clear indicator of the desire to move forward and enter a new era for the iconic international airline.
Mr. Joyce cites the aircraft's incredible efficiency as to why it was chosen, adding that the new technology will reduce overall fuel burn and cut heavy maintenance requirements, while also opening up a number of new destinations from around the globe.
Due to the new airplane’s size, it gives the airline significantly more flexibility without having to make significant changes to their overall capacity.
The 787-9 Dreamliners have larger windows, improved cabin pressure and experience a reduction in turbulence, according to Qantas.
