New research has revealed that British motorists will drive more than 15.2 billion miles on their holidays in 2016.
According to the study by automotive servicing and repair company Kwik Fit, more than 15.1 million drivers will use their own car on holiday this year, with the average motorist driving 1,002 miles.
Those setting off in the capital are set for lengthy trips, with Londoners driving an average of 1,409 miles, nearly a six hundred mile increase on the average holidaymaker from the East Midlands (817 miles).
The South West of England, the home of Cornwall and Devon, is the most popular destination for a self-drive holiday, with 28% of people heading there for a holiday, followed by the South Coast and the Isle of Wight, Wales and the Lake District.
Europe remains a popular travel destination, with 10% of British tourists driving on holiday saying they are heading to France with Italy, Spain, Ireland and Germany also among the other countries appealing to UK travellers.
Also included in the research was that holidaymakers tend to neglect some of the most basic checks on their car before beginning their journey – 40% do not check the tyre pressure and 60% fail to evaluate their tread depth.
Just above half (53%) of all drivers check their oil and screen wash levels, with even fewer assessing their brake fluid, while less than one in five decide to get their car serviced before they set off.
The research also highlights that drivers over 55 are more likely to make pre-holiday checks, including tyres, brake fluid, coolant and oil than those aged between 18 and 34 – largely due to habits established when driving older cars that had a significantly lower standard when it comes to reliability.
If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your European travel insurance in advance.
