Virgin Atlantic has been named as the UK’s travel industry’s top private company, coming in tenth place overall in the Sunday Times Top Track 100.
The airline managed to achieve sales of £2,782 million during 2015, although the figure recorded is a 5% drop off on the previous year.
A partnership with Delta Air Lines and the airline cutting costs has meant that Virgin Atlantic is still profitable for a second consecutive year too.
The airline managed to come in just above Heathrow in 11th place, which recorded sales of £2,765 million. The number of passengers passing through in 2015 rose by one million to around 75 million.
Further down the list, Exeter and Norwich airport owner Rigby Group came 27th, recording sales figures of £1,628 million, and Virgin Rail placed in 51st with sales just topping the £1 billion mark.
Bourne Leisure, who own Butlin’s, Haven and Warner, came in 54th place, partly down to a wide range of park upgrades in the last year.
In 68th position was Monarch Holdings, who own Monarch Aircraft Engineering, Monarch Holidays and Monarch Airlines – the group recorded sales of £828 million, impressive given that Grey Bull Capital rescued and restructured the business not long ago.
Gatwick, who are currently competing against Heathrow in order to build a new runway, managed £673 million in sales, handling just shy of 41 million passengers.
Completing the list of travel firms in the top 100 were Trailfinders who appeared in 94th place, thanks to their 31 travel centres in the UK and Ireland.
The Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 100 league table ranks Britain’s top 100 private companies based on the biggest sales, and is compiled by Fast Track and published yearly in July.
