Two mega cruise ships intended for Star Cruises and eight other vessels for Crystal Cruises have been ordered from the Lloyd Werft Group by Genting Hong Kong.
Each of the Star Cruises Global Class of ships has been specially designed for worldwide cruising and will measure 201,000 gross tons with 5,000 lower berths.
International class cruise experience
Chairman of Genting Hong Kong, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, said: “Passengers on our Global Class ships will enjoy an international class cruise experience to all parts of the world, yet in an environment where they will feel at home, whether it is food, culture, shows, enrichment programs or excursions.”
“With the first two ships, we are focused on delivering a world-class vacation experience for Chinese cruise passengers at an affordable price whilst enjoying fun-filled onboard and on-land adventures in many cities in the most seamless way, without the necessity of checking-in and checking-out of airports and hotels,” he added.
Year-round cruising pioneers
Genting Hong Kong are pioneers of year-round cruising, having starting operations in Asia 23 years ago with Star Cruises. The company found further success when it bought out Norwegian Cruise Line 16 years ago and re-launched it to now be the third largest and most profitable cruise line in the United States on a per berth basis.
Genting Hong Kong’s other well-known brands include the international luxury cruise market favourite Crystal Cruises and Dream Cruises which caters for the Asian luxury cruise market.
Delivery of the new ships will start between 2019 and 2020, first seeing one ship a year and later upping the pace to two a year.
The first two ships of the new series have been designed with Chinese characteristics. They will be the first purpose built cruise ships of their kind aimed specifically at the Chinese overseas tourist market, which has become a major player on the international scene in recent years.
