Record breaking tourism figures for the number of international visits to the UK in the month of February have been released by The Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Visitor numbers were up 8% compared to the same month in 2015, as there were 2.25 million visits to the UK in February 2016. The amount of money spent by those visitors increased by 6% to reach £1.08 billion.
Second month of record breaking
The new figures follow a record-breaking January for inbound visits to the UK. February saw strong growth in business visits, up 12% year on year to an all-time high of 750,000.
A record for inbound tourism to Britain was set last year with 35.8 million visits, a 4% increase on 2014. The latest figures follow a general trend over the past six years as there were six million more visits in 2015 than 2010, marking a rise of 20%.
A cracking start
Patricia Yates, VisitBritain Director, said that 2016 is “off to a cracking start”, driven by a number of international marketing campaigns around major events.
Events such as the Queen's 90th birthday, the visit of US President Barack Obama and the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death have all helped Britain gain exposure world-wide as a tourist destination recently.
So much to see and do
David Evennett, the Tourism Minister, said: “This record-breaking start to the year shows that our fantastic array of attractions remain hugely popular with visitors from all over the world.
“There is so much to see and do across the whole of the UK and we are absolutely committed to encouraging tourists to see all the hidden gems we have to offer.”
