A record number of people visited the Sunshine State in 2015, according to new estimated figures released this week.
According to Visit Florida, the state's official tourism arm, 105 million visitors gave the state its fifth record-breaking year in a row.
Increase in Brits choosing Florida last year
The number of Brits travelling to Florida in 2015 increased to an estimated 1.6 million, an increase of 5% from the previous year, helping the Sunshine State to break 2014’s record high of 98.5 million visitors.
Following the news that overall figures showed a projected 6.6% increase from 2014, Florida Governor, Rick Scott, commented that: “I am proud to announce that Florida has surpassed our tourism goal and welcomed an historic 105 million visitors to our state in 2015.”
During 2015 there was an increase of more than 8% in total enplanements at the eighteen different airports in Florida, which was also a record 6.1million more people than in the previous year.
A boost to the tourism sector
The increase in visitors helped to boost the local economy with the number of people employed in travel-related employment increasing to a record high of 1.2 million Florida residents.
“Tourism plays an important role in supporting our economy, and we will continue to make strategic investments in the tourism industry to keep Florida on track to becoming first for jobs,” Scott explained.
“With five consecutive record years for tourism, it is time to set our goal even higher, and I look forward to welcoming 115 million visitors to the Sunshine State this year.”
Record breaking numbers
Early estimates show that a record breaking 25.2 million people visited Florida in the last quarter of last year.
If the preliminary figures are accurate this will represent the biggest visitation number during a fourth quarter that the Sunshine State has ever experienced and reflects an increase of 6.7% year on year.
