Abu Dhabi, the capital city in the United Arab Emirates, saw visitor numbers record a strong increase in 2015.
The Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority have released figures last year which show that the number of people who stayed in hotels in the city compared to the year before rose by 18%.
Popular with Brits
Abu Dhabi's hotels and hotel apartments saw 4,105,846 guests check in throughout the year and they stayed for a total of 12,243,096 nights – a 17% year on year increase. Hotel occupancy was high at 75.4%.
Brits were the third biggest group of hotel guests and also the leading European market. A total of 231,337 UK travellers, a rise of 14% in arrivals, stayed almost a million nights which was a 9% increase year on year.
The attraction of Abu Dhabi to British visitors has been increasing for the past three years, each of which have seen a double-digit growth percentage.
Similar growth expected in 2016
UK & Ireland country manager at TCA Abu Dhabi, Nabeel Al Zarouni, said: “It's great to see the UK market continuing to grow at such a fast rate.”
Acknowledging that there had been double-digit growth every year since 2012, Zarouni added: “With cruise ships homeporting in the new cruise terminal encouraging pre- and post-cruise stays, landmark hotels from Four Seasons, Grand Hyatt and Fairmont all opening this year, plus the hotly anticipated unveiling of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, we're expecting similar growth levels in 2016.”
It isn't just Brits who are flocking to Abu Dhabi as China has actually been the best performing market for the city in terms of growth, recording a 47% increase in visitor numbers year on year.
South Africa was also an important market last year, with visitor numbers increasing 42% from 2014, in part due to the opening of a TCA Abu Dhabi office in Johannesburg near the start of the year. A daily service between Johannesburg and Abu Dhabi also launched in March.
