Brits checking in for flights with an Apple Watch boarding pass at Heathrow Airport can expect their experience to become even easier due to the overwhelming success of the innovative British Airways app.
During the months of June and October this year, British Airways experienced a 386% increase in the amount of passengers taking advantage of the app. In response to this British Airways has announced that it will be introducing new 'Scan and Go' devices at the check-in desks of Terminals Three and Five of the London airport.
Faster and easier
The new scanners, which will be installed by 15 December will be hand-held devices rather than mounted and are intended to make check-in easier and faster. Currently, passengers have to remove their Apple Watches in order for them to be scanned, causing delays and hold-ups.
The new devices will allow users to simply slide the watch under the scanner whilst still wearing it, eliminating the problem of lining up barcodes. The 'Scan and Go' devices will scan wearers boarding passes and allow them to print their own baggage labels. The five million people who have downloaded the app onto their mobile phones will also be able to take advantage of the new scanners.
A better customer experience
Head of mobile at British Airways, Kevin McQuillan, said: “When we saw the dramatic rise in the number of people using the app on their Apple watches we knew we needed to create new features in the terminal which would make the experience even better for them.”
In a bid to make their customer’s journeys simpler and quicker, British Airways was one of the first companies to develop an app specifically for the Apple smartwatch when it was first launched.
Customers now have access to real-time gate information, flight status, departure time countdowns and even weather reports for their chosen destinations. Users of the Apple Watch app now make-up over 5% of app usage and a new version of the app for iPads will be available in early 2017.
