Brits on the lookout for their next city break will be pleased to see that the latest Lonely Planet; Best in Travel publication, highlights the top cities to visit in 2016.
Interestingly, Montenegro’s Kotor was named the best city in the world to visit next year by the publication.
Must-see destinations around the world
Known for its stunning harbour and Venetian-style architecture, it’s a location that should be on every traveller’s to-do list, according to experts.
Meanwhile, Quito, also known as the capital of Ecuador, gained second place; high in the Andes it has the stunning backdrop of mountain peaks, brimming with a number of architectural gems.
According to the findings, other must-see destinations include George Town in Malaysia and Mumbai in India.
However, some of the go-to cities in Lonely Planet’s list are a little closer to home; with the likes of Dublin and Manchester making their way into the top 10.
A little closer to home
The Irish capital of Dublin was described as a city that “pulsates with youthful vibrancy”, while Manchester was praised for being the UK’s “cultural boom town”.
Manchester was also placed on the list because of the Government’s recent £78 million investment in rebuilding The Factory; a new multi-million pound purpose-built arts space, including a 2,200 seat theatre.
Meanwhile, travel experts described the Whitworth in the city; which reopened in 2015 since a £15 million transformation, as one of Britain’s most important art galleries – and of course we can’t forget the city’s football heritage.
The top ten cities Brits should be visiting in 2016 are as follows:
1. Kotor, Montenegro
2. Quito, Ecuador
3. Dublin, Republic of Ireland
4. George Town, Malaysia
5. Rotterdam, Holland
6. Mumbai, India
