Brits are no longer on the lookout for a traditional beach holiday, but are now keen to try cruises, according to a recent report.
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has revealed that a quarter of Brits have been on a cruise holiday in the last 12 months, highlighting just how popular these retreats are becoming.
Steady growth in the industry
According to the report, 1 in 10 Brits who have been on holiday in the last year went on a cruise, representing an increase from 7% in 2014.
This steady growth looks to continue with 13% of people saying they are planning a cruise holiday in the upcoming 12 months.
The report found that cruise holidays were particularly popular among holidaymakers over the age of 65, with 13% of those who took a holiday opting for a cruise; this was shortly followed by those aged 25-34 (12%).
Young families with small children also seemed to prefer the cruise lifestyle, with 15% of them having had a cruise in the past year.
Perhaps surprisingly, 25-34 year olds appeared to be the most interested in taking a cruise in the next few months, with 48% saying they were interested in giving the experience a try.
Enjoying multiple destinations
ABTA has said that part of this growth in popularity of cruise holidays can be down to the number of returning passengers (80%) stating they would take this type of holiday again.
For those Brits who desire to see multiple destinations and enjoy on-site facilities, including catering, entertainment and classy accommodation; a cruise could be the perfect holiday.
Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive at ABTA, said that cruise holidays are a brilliant way of ensuring you have the chance to see a variety of destinations and landmarks with all the necessities taken care of.
As a result, it’s not surprising the market has expanded over the past few years and now offers much more than the traditional Mediterranean and Caribbean destinations, with Scandinavian, Arctic and European cruises now on offer, he added.
