With its rich history and impressive network of picturesque islands, Croatia has increasingly become the destination of choice for Brits keen to enjoy the delights of the continent with a difference.
Now, new research from beach holiday specialists On The Beach has confirmed Croatia's status as a firm fixture on the tourist map, putting it in number one position in a ranking of the top five destinations showing the biggest increase in bookings.
According to the figures, bookings to Croatia have climbed by an impressive 250% year-on-year, with the country's lead continued by the following destinations:
3. Neapolitan Riviera
Overall, the booking figures for January show that Spain continues to be a firm favourite with holidaying Brits, with the Canary Islands taking the crown in a list of the top five most popular destinations for the month. The ranking continued with the following destinations:
2. Mainland Spain
3. Balearic Islands
4. Greek Islands
When it came to the holiday type that most ticked the boxes for Brits abroad all-inclusive holidays took the lead with 50% of all bookings, followed by self-catering (24%), half board holidays (12%) and bed and breakfast holidays (10%).
Commenting on the figures, Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer at On the Beach said:
“January is always a busy month for bookings but this year was busier than ever. Our January bookings suggest that Spain will once again reign this year but it is good to see Croatia becoming more popular. With an increase in flights from the UK to Madeira, we expect more people than ever before will be heading to this beautiful island this year.”
Another key European destination to watch out for this year, according to a recent ranking of 2015’s best European destinations, is the French city of Bordeaux.
Claiming the number one spot in the annual ranking from European Best Destinations (EBD), the charms of the city were described in the following way by one fan:
“Bordeaux has everything of a capital city without the disadvantages of it. I like Paris a lot, but Bordeaux is like Paris but with more nature, landscapes, and a relaxed rhythm of life.”
