February 15th marks the first day of the half-term for many families across the UK. As winter holiday enthusiasts use this week-long stretch to indulge in their passion, ABTA is urging them to 'stay safe' when they hit the slopes.
The travel association has forecasted that tens of thousands of Brits are set to head to popular resorts in France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy and beyond for a spot of skiing and snowboarding.
In order to ensure that winter sports fans stay safe as they enjoy their favourite ski runs, ABTA is calling on them to familiarise themselves with key safety information before they put on their snow boots.
Research cited by ABTA reveals that a third of travellers are still skiing without ski helmets, whilst almost a third (29%) is still heading off their winter sports holidays without the right insurance in place.
Commenting on the situation, Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive said:
“Recent heavy snowfalls have created some fantastic conditions and lots of Brits will be looking forward to a great week of skiing, however they should be aware of the potential risks of such activities. Along with following safety advice, purchasing the right level of travel insurance, and checking that annual policies are extended to cover action sports should be a top priority for skiers and snowboarders.”
To help avid skiers and snowboarders on their way ABTA has put together an advice section with winter sports tips which can be found at www.abta.com/skisafe.
Bansko revealed as cheapest family ski holiday destination this half term revealed
Favourable exchange rates may be just one of the reasons why Brits are heading off to enjoy winter sports holidays in their droves.
Recent research from M&S Bank revealed that Bansko in Bulgaria took the crown for the cheapest family ski holiday destination this half term.
Looking at the total cost of a family holiday for four to the ski resort the research revealed a total holiday outlay of £2,880 - £154 (-5.1% less) than the cost for the same holiday in 2014.
If you are heading off on a ski break, it's important to organise ski travel insurance in advance.
