New Zealand's stunning natural landscapes have inspired even the most reluctant of travellers to dust off their backpacks and set a course for the southern hemisphere.
New Zealand has now added to its list of traveller credentials after being named top country as part of the Wanderlust Magazine Travel Awards 2015.
Nearly 3,000 of the magazine's readers cast their votes to determine which destinations were hot or not in the globetrotter stakes, with New Zealand's lead continued by the following countries:
2. Namibia
3. Ethiopia
4. Bhutan
5. Zambia
6. Oman
7. Costa Rica
8. Laos
9. Myanmar/Burma
10. Vietnam
Commenting on the ranking editor in chief Lyn Hughes, said:
“Although New Zealand is back on top, it is particularly interesting to see Ethiopia voted third - having not even made the top ten last year. With its rare wolves, rock-hewn churches, mighty mountains and elaborate coffee ceremonies, this country is fascinating. I wonder if it could become the new Namibia?"
Claiming first place position in the ranking of emerging destinations was Papua New Guinea (PNG). This comes just a few weeks after a village home stay enterprise in PNG was identified as one of the hottest tourist experiences for 2015 by Lonely Planet.
The emerging destinations ranking was completed by the following destinations:
2. Mongolia
3. Montenegro
4. Iran
5. Bolivia
“Despite being challenging for independent travellers, Papua New Guinea has struck a chord with our readers. It seems that people are increasingly looking for that off the beaten track travel experience and PNG, along with Mongolia and Iran, really do satisfy their thirst for adventure,” continued Hughes added.
Other category winners included the following:
