British holidaymakers crossing their fingers for a spell on the continent for less in 2015 will welcome the news that the falling value of the euro may deliver them just that.
Last week the euro hit a four-year low against the US dollar, with Central Bank president Mario Draghi describing the eurozone's recovery as “fragile and uneven”.
While the above may make for less than positive reading for countries within the eurozone, according to the Daily Telegraphit does translate to holiday savings for Brits.
Drawing on the strength of the pound, the newspaper argues that Brits abroad will now pay £83 less for a four-bedroom villa in the south of France in March in a year-on-year comparison - whilst this saving stands at £158 for a four-bedroom farmhouse in eastern Spain.
A spokeswoman for ABTA told the newspaper:
“This favourable exchange rate means those booking and paying in euros and stocking up on currency for imminent trips can make important savings. “As well as being a very busy early booking period for summer holidays, January is also a key period for consumers to purchase winter holidays such as ski and city breaks on the continent – and British holidaymakers will feel the benefit of their money going further on these breaks when the pound is strong against the euro and other local currencies,” she said.
Andrew Brown, of Post Office Travel Money, argued that while UK travellers can continue to rely on the mighty pound to book a getaway for less in Europe, Brits will still need to do their homework to see where the biggest savings can be made.
“There is little difference in resort costs between the Algarve, Bulgaria and the Costa del Sol, which are cheapest in Europe, but keep an eye on Crete and Cyprus,” he said.
If you're planning the perfect European escape it's important to organise European travel insurance in advance of your trip.
