A total of two million British holidaymakers are planning to travel overseas during this upcoming Bank Holiday weekend, according to the Association of British Travel Agents.
Annually popular destinations such as Greece, Turkey, Mallorca, Spain and Florida are all proving popular as many people look to spend the 22nd-25th August in sunny overseas climes. ABTA have also suggested that city breaks will also remain popular this weekend, with Amsterdam, Barcelona and Paris among the ideal destinations in this bracket.
However, not everyone is heading abroad it would seem as ABTA also report strong interest in UK ‘staycations’ across a variety of locations. City breaks in London and Edinburgh are proving to be of strong interest, as are more family-friendly holidays in places such as the Channel Islands.
Mark Tanzer, the ABTA Chief Executive, assessed the trends among holidaymakers as part of this great British Bank Holiday escape. “This weekend is set to be one of the busiest of the year as we see lots of holidaymakers heading off for the Bank Holiday weekend. Whilst a holiday budget will go further abroad this year thanks to a strong pound, we are also expecting lots of people to enjoy the long weekend at home,” he suggested.
As a result of the anticipated amount of travellers, airports across the UK are expecting to have a very busy weekend. For example, approximately 500,000 passengers are expected to fly from Heathrow at some point during the weekend.
The estimated figure stands at 274,000 for Gatwick, 134,000 for Stansted and 78,000 for Luton. ABTA are also predicting that regional airports and also the Eurostar will be extremely busy during the hectic 4-day period. If you are heading abroad to make the most of this upcoming Bank Holiday weekend, it is important to organise travel insurance in advance of your trip to put your mind at ease.
