With their A’levels completed many students will be looking for a chance to unwind and get a taste of far-flung destinations around the globe before they commit to a full-time job.
This is where the gap year comes in, giving students a year or more to really sample destinations around the globe and all they have to offer. With around 25,500 school and college leavers deferring their places, scores of gap year students will be feverishly packing their backpacks for the trip of a lifetime.
And according to figures reported by leading ABTA Members specialising in gap years, Australia has emerged as the destination of choice for budding gap adventurers. With a working/holiday visa up for grabs and the chance to take in Sydney, The Outback The Great Barrier reef and more, it’s no wonder that Australia attracts gap year students year after year.
The top ten ranking was completed by the following destinations: Thailand, USA, New Zealand, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Vietnam, South Africa, Brazil.
Commenting on the findings, Victoria Bacon, Head of Communications, ABTA said: “Taking a gap year can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a young person’s life and young people up and down the country will be heading off in the next 12 months, often spending thousands of pounds of savings on their travel plans. Doing plenty of research and talking to reputable gap year travel companies can help you decide what to do and where to go – it is very important that whatever your gap year involves you plan it properly, to help ensure a safe and rewarding experience.”
