Football fans planning a trip to Brazil to watch the 2014 Football World Cup in action have been warned to exercise caution when planning their getaway.
The warning comes from travel association ABTA who urges fans of the beautiful game to ensure that the travel companies they use are ABTA members. Tens of thousands of England fans are expected to head to Brazil, according to ABTA, to take in a game or to simply enjoy the vibrancy of the World Cup’s host country.
Because of the high value of trips to major sporting events they are often a popular target for fraudsters. Those looking for last-minute bargains, with tickets, hotels and air tickets for these events normally sold at a premium, are particularly vulnerable to fraud.
Victoria Bacon ABTA Head of Communications said: “We are expecting tens of thousands of fans to head out to Brazil and have a wonderful time soaking up the World Cup atmosphere and enjoying this vibrant country. Fans heading out last minute should ensure they book with a reputable travel company who can take the hassle out of travelling to Brazil. As well as offering financial protection these companies will be able to advise on things such as vaccinations and passport requirements. It’s also vital that fans take out adequate travel insurance and follow Foreign Office advice regarding health and safety.”
Brazil was highlighted on ABTA’s destination to watch in 2014, and research from the travel association found that the destination is growing in popularity amongst UK travellers. Four out of ten (39%) of people think Brazil is a beautiful destination, one in five (22%) consider it to be a glamorous party destination, while one in ten (10%) of felt it was a ‘must visit’ destination.
ABTA has put together tips for fans heading to Brazil or anyone planning a trip on abta.com. If you are heading on a long-haul trip this summer, it is important to organise long-haul travel insurance in advance.
