The French capital has topped the popular Easter getaway list for the second year running, according to Wimdu.co.uk.
The accommodation booking site’s figures reveal that despite losing 4% of its market share, Paris has held on to remain the most popular destination for Easter breaks. Unsurprisingly, the ‘City of Love’ is a popular choice for couples. Paris has increased its lead over other top destinations, such as Amsterdam and Berlin. However, it hasn’t proved to be as favourable with families, groups and singles in 2014.
Couples wanting to spoil each other the Easter weekend can indulge in a luxury spa treatment before tucking into a special ‘sprunch’ at ‘Le First’ for £143 per person. In terms of fastest growing destinations, Rome is top of the list, with a staggering 56% increase in bookings for 2014 compared to the same time last year. It suffered an unfortunate slump last year when Pope Benedict resigned, but it has bounced back in considerable style.
This year Pope Francis will be delivering Mass at 10.15am and anyone visiting Rome will be able to join the 250,000 pilgrims in Saint Peter’s square. Other destinations that fared better this year were Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, which was up by 44%, the Big Apple, New York, which saw a 43% increase. The top five was rounded off by Madrid (+28%) and Prague (+25%).
Barcelona proved to be a top choice for families this Easter, as they look to combine the benefits of a city break and beach holiday. It’s worth visiting the Museum of Chocolate on Easter Sunday as the kids can take part in egg decoration classes. This year groups seem to heading for a wild – or cultural - weekend in Amsterdam, which has beaten Paris to take the top spot for group bookings. Explore the city’s canals during the day before relaxing into the party scene at night.
Last, but by no means least, the German capital Berlin is the top choice for singles. Although just 3% are travelling solo this Easter, Berlin managed to scoop 15% of bookings. Whether travelling as a family to Barcelona, Paris as a couple or to Berlin alone, it’s important to invest in travel insurance before jetting off.
