Steeped in history and boasting stunning architecture, it’s no wonder that many couples choose the watery byways of Venice as the perfect spot to reignite the flames of love.
Now research has shown that stunning Italian city is also the ideal location for singletons to partner up with someone new for a holiday fling. With Valentine’s just around the corner would-be lovebirds may want to get booking their gondola rides sooner rather than later.
The findings come as part of ‘the holiday’ journey of love’ research by travel comparison website KAYAK.co.uk, which found that that 18% of those surveyed would plump for Venice as the ideal choice for a brief romantic encounter. When it comes to those looking to make the ideal commitment to their other half, the French capital continued to claim its moniker as the city of love, with 24% of people choosing Paris as the ideal destination for a proposal.
Further figures from the research showed that those who don’t want all the fuss of a big wedding on UK shores would choose Barbados as the preferred spot for eloping. This held true for 24% of those surveyed. For those newlywed’s-to-be who wanted to sample a taste of island paradise, the Maldives was chosen as the ideal wedding destination (18%).
Commenting on the figures, a spokesperson for travel comparison website KAYAK.co.uk, who commissioned the research, said: “We wanted to understand where, given the choice, Brits would head around the world for the different elements of the "journey of love" and the findings were certainly enlightening. “With January being a peak time for holiday bookings, Brits should take heed of the study, particularly if a partner suggests heading to Ibiza or Paris, as it could mean a break-up or proposal is on the cards.”
When it came to those who wanted to break-up rather than make-up, a holiday to Ibiza was akin to splitsville for 48% of those surveyed, while 21% would head to the Big Apple to recover from a break-up. If you are planning a trip abroad in 2014 for whatever reason it is important to secure travel insurance in advance.
