The capital is known for many things, including its wealth of landmarks, historical architecture and the diversity of its many areas.
With so much on offer, it may come as no surprise to find that London has emerged as the most reviewed destination on review site Tripadvisor, beating popular locations around the world including Rome, Paris, New York and Las Vegas.
Figures for 2013 show that a staggering 459,000 reviews about London were placed on the site, with the most popular attraction that came under the discerning eye of British visitors being the Harry Potter tour at the Warner Brothers Studio. This came in at more than 8,400 write-ups. TripAdvisor’s communications manager, James Kay, outlined that “there’s quite a strong review culture in the UK at the moment.”
“As we end a fantastic 2013, we wanted to recognise some of the shining stars from our global travel community,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. “It is our community’s insightful reviews and opinions that have made TripAdvisor the world’s largest and most beloved site for planning the perfect trip.” Stephen Page, professor of tourism at Bournemouth University, argued that Tripadvisor has changed our travel experiences. He said:
“It has transformed the way we now look at tourism and travel experiences. “It has led to a much closer engagement between travellers and businesses by shaping and helping to form opinions of products and experiences.” Further figures showed that the US topped the ranking of most content contributed overall, followed by the UK and Italy.
Countries in Asia also took the top three spots when it came to the most photos submitted per member on average. This total was led by Japan and followed by Singapore and Malaysia. When it came to the reviews that were most helpful to tourists, the top spot was secured by Belgium, with Russia and the Ukraine taking second and third place respectively. If you are planning a trip abroad in 2013 it is important to secure travel insurance in advance.
