In recent years the UK has proved itself to be pretty good at certain things. We’re very good at hosting the Olympics. Andy Murray has shown we’re not so bad at tennis either. However, a new study by YouGov has also shown that we’re the best place in Europe for another activity: shopping.
The EuroTrack survey which tracks public opinion in France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway has found that Britain is the best place to come shopping.
The findings also come hot on the heels of more information that shows that Britain’s economic growth has doubled since the start of the year. Consumer confidence is at its highest levels since early 2010 according to YouGov and the Centre for Economic and Business Research.
When asked, 32 per cent of the respondents said that the UK was the best place in Europe for shopping. 20 per cent of those asked said Italy and another 20 per cent said France. However, the UK didn’t do so well when asked which country had the best weather in Europe. A massive 56 per cent said Spain and a further 44 per cent said Greece. Italy came third in the poll with 32 per cent.
When asked about food, Italy was top with France and Spain second and third. For fun and socialising, Spain was top followed by Greece and Italy. For sightseeing it was Italy, followed by France and then the UK.
Commenting on the survey, YouGov director of political and social research, Joe Twyman said: “The fact that Europeans see the UK as the best place to visit for shopping could be another small bit of good economic news this week, which no doubt most Britons feel is long overdue. It also shows that Britain has a distinguishing factor advantage as a holiday destination, whereas Italy, France and Spain dominate in most other categories.” So when it comes time to book your flights and travel insurance, think about what you’re looking for most from your holidays. If it’s good shopping then maybe you’re better off staying here.
