British holidaymakers have voted the Spanish island of Majorca as their favourite destination for a spot of sun, sea and sand in a recent poll conducted by On the Beach.
Tenerife, located in the Spanish Canary Islands, also took second place in the top five ranking of UK travellers favourite holiday destinations, followed by the Algarve in Portugal (3rd), Gran Canaria (4th), also in the Spanish Canary Islands , and Cyprus (5th). Booking data from On the Beach revealed that Majorca is set to see an influx in British tourists this year, with bookings climbing by 25% year-on-year.
Tenerife, Ibiza and Alicante are also set to experience a surge in visitor numbers. British travellers have also helped to make Croatia a firm fixture on the tourist map, with bookings rising by a staggering 96% year-on-year. Alistair Daly Chief Marketing Officer at On the Beach comments: “Spain has been attracting British holidaymakers to its shores for many years and our survey cements its position as the number one destination for British sun-seekers. Croatia has been attracting more and more holidaymakers over the past few years and bookings for 2013 suggest that it could soon be rivalling Spain."
The recent Eurobarometer survey also found that Spain led a ranking of the most popular destinations for a 2013 holiday with 12% of the vote, followed by Italy (8%) France (7%), Austria, Germany, Greece, the UK (all 4%) and Croatia (3%). Further findings from the study revealed the factors that would encourage holidaymakers to return to a country, time and again, with 44% arguing that natural landscapes would encourage them to book a break to a destination for a second time.
This was followed by the quality of accommodation at their chosen destination (31%) the level of prices, cultural and historical attractions (both 26%), and how well a country extends a welcoming hand to tourists (22%). For 20% the quality of services or activities available would endear them to particular destination, while for 7% the range of accessible facilities for holidaymakers with special needs was crucial.
If you are heading off on holiday in 2013, it is important to secure travel insurance whichever destination you are travelling to.
