A recent survey of holidaymakers across the globe has revealed our changing travel habits, with a third (33%) of travellers now prepared to go it alone in an attempt to tick off the numerous destinations from their bucket list.
While some globetrotters are keen to seek out solitude as they explore each of the world’s seven continents, more than a quarter (26%) of those surveyed are happiest when they have friends, partners or spouses in tow on their travels. The survey of over 38,000 members of leading travel social network, Where are you now? (WAYN) also revealed that traditional guided tours had fallen out of favour with many travellers, with 49% of those questioned preferring to make their own plans when it comes to visiting cultural and historical attractions.
Budget and mid-range accommodation, as opposed to luxury hotels, also proved the most popular with money-conscious travellers, who argued that high costs were more likely to deter them from visiting their destination of choice than even crime or disease.
When questioning holidaymakers about visiting South America, Brazil emerged as the most popular country on the continent for almost half (49%) of those questioned, while an ideal South American break would combine the best of both city and beach. The majority (90%) of those surveyed also argued that they would visit a number of countries and cities to make the most of their journey to the continent.
Peter Ward from WAYN said: “We believe the internet accounts for some of these changes with increased amounts of accessible and relevant information empowering travellers to travel alone, stay in more diverse accommodation and plan visits to previously unconsidered destinations. I’m a big advocate of independent travel and our site gives users an opportunity to make friends at home before they travel so even if they do prefer to go solo, they have a virtual friend to explore their destination with.”
If you are heading off on holiday in 2013, it is important to secure travel insurance whichever destination you are travelling to.
