With its impressive stretches of coastline, vibrant cities and tasty local cuisine Spain has proved popular with tourists from around the globe for decades, and now the country that is home to sun, sea and sangria has proven it is still on winning form, according to recent research..
The Eurobarometer survey found that Spain led a ranking of the most popular destinations for a 2013 holiday with 12% of the vote, followed by Italy (8%) France (7%), Austria, Germany, Greece, the UK (all 4%) and Croatia (3%). Further findings from the study revealed the factors that would encourage holidaymakers to return to a country, time and again, with 44% arguing that natural landscapes would encourage them to book a break to a destination for a second time.
This was followed by the quality of accommodation at their chosen destination (31%) the level of prices, cultural and historical attractions (both 26%), and how well a country extends a welcoming hand to tourists (22%). For 20% the quality of services or activities available would endear them to particular destination, while for 7% the range of accessible facilities for holidaymakers with special needs was crucial.
Among the key reasons cited for planning a spell abroad, was the chance to soak up the sunshine or laze on the beach (40%) while 36% argued their primary motivation for heading off on holiday was to visit family, friends or relatives.
For just over a quarter (26%) of those surveyed communing with nature was the key reason for going on holiday, while 20% headed on an overseas holiday for cultural reasons. 12% of survey respondents opted for a holiday to fully relax and unwind with a wellness, spa or health treatment, while getting active by taking part in a range of sporting activities was key for 10% of travellers. For a further 7% attending a specific event, such as festival, was their main reason for taking a holiday last year.
If you are heading off on holiday in 2013, it is important to secure travel insurance whichever destination you are travelling to.
