Airports may not be foodies’ natural first port of call for a slap up meal, but it appears that departures and delicacies can in fact both sit together happily in the same sentence, after a poll revealed the top 20 airport eateries across the globe.
Reviewers from thedailymeal.com have spent six months testing restaurants and cafes to find the best food for flyers, with America dominating the top 10, and the UK receiving a respectable two nods.First place was claimed by Barcelona's Porta Gaig restaurant, in El Prat's Terminal 1, which serves traditional Catalan fare and is headed up by Michelin-starred Charles Gaig, famed for his Restaurant Gaig in the Catalan capital.
Serving up flavour-packed hearty Texan beef brisket and pork ribs, the Salt Lick BBQ at Austin-Bergstrom Airport in Texas took second place. This was followed by Tortas Frontera at Chicago O'Hare Airport, serving hand-crafted tortas, griddle-baked Mexican sandwiches and fresh-made guacamole, in third.
Fourth place is occupied by the only other non-American restaurant to make it into the top ten; Bubbles Seafood & Wine Bar at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. Here diners can sample traditional Dutch favourites, such as raw herring with fresh bread and onions.
Completing the top ten are: Baltimore-Washington International (Obrycki’s), LaGuardia, New York (Crust and Custom Burgers by Pat LaFrieda, 6th and 8th place respectively), Dulles International, Washington (Five Guys), Los Angeles (Encounter), Boston Logan (Legal Seafood). In the UK Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food restaurant in Heathrow Terminal 5 made it into the top 20 in 13th place, while The Full Monty breakfast at Jamie's Union Jacks Bar came in at 18th place.
Kim Choo's Nonja Kitchen at Changi Airport in Singapore was the only Asian airport eatery featured in the top 20. Here diners can delight in dumplings made using Choo's grandmother's recipe, as well as spicy chicken curry, satay and otak meat cakes.
