Birmingham airport claims to have seen more passengers through its gates than any other UK airport in August.
Passenger figures for the popular Midlands airport increased by more than 9% year-on-year, reaching one million during the peak summer month. “August has been a fantastic month for us in terms of passenger numbers,” said Paul Kehoe Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport.
“It is particularly pleasing to learn we were the best performing airport in the UK, clearly demonstrating there is strong demand to fly from Birmingham.” A record-breaking 1,031,259 passengers flew in and out of the airport during August, making it the fourth busiest month in the airport’s history. This was also the ninth time the airport has pushed through the one million-passenger barrier.
Birmingham Airport claims it experienced the biggest passenger footfall in August, surpassing all other UK airports. Mr Kehoe believes a number of passengers were largely holidaymakers rather than business travellers. He claims this is the end result of introducing new routes to popular holiday destinations such as Barcelona and Nice.
“We have seen encouraging signs particularly from our leisure passengers, who have decided to take advantage of the extra capacity and new routes now served by Monarch, including Barcelona and Nice,” he said. “Traditional summer sun destinations including Palma, Alicante and Malaga also proved to be tremendously popular in August.”
Birmingham Airport will enjoy a number of new routes for the winter schedule including four routes with budget carrier Ryanair to Barcelona, Krakow, Milan and Palma De Mallorca starting in November. “We are now turning our attention to the winter season ahead, making sure we continue the great results we have achieved this summer,” added Mr Kehoe. If you are heading overseas this winter, remember to take out adequate travel insurance before you leave to ensure you are protected financially.
