You’re only as old as the destinations you holiday in – while this isn’t a phrase quoted often, it could soon become popular thanks to a growing trend towards older travellers frequenting the haunts normally associated with their younger counterparts.
According to the latest research from sunshine.co.uk – questioning 2,764 UK adults aged 40; holidaymakers over 40 are embracing the hedonist within and jetting off for a stint abroad to rub shoulders with the 18 to 30s set.
Just under a quarter (24%) of survey respondents revealed that they had enjoyed a holiday to remember in Majorca, Ibiza and mainland Spain, with over a third (37%) also admitting to having nursed a hangover each day of their holiday.
Other holiday destinations on the continent that ticked the boxes for over 40s looking to indulge in their youthful holiday spirit included Cyprus and Turkey.
Explaining why they had opted against acting their age on their recent holidays, the research revealed that for 41% it was the chance to let off steam while 16% had been a guest on a stag or hen do. For 11% their holiday choice proved to be the perfect way to get away from everyday life following a break-up.
Chris Clarkson, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk, said: "Booze-fuelled holidays are clearly not just for 18-30 year olds.
"We were surprised that these wild holidays are the third most popular type of trip for those aged 40 and over though.
“Holidays should be about doing what you want to do, not what everyone else does or says you should be doing. If you can keep up with the youngsters, go for it."
Further figures from the research showed that in general, the over 40s holiday style of choice is about as far away from the bustling nightlife of Europe’s most popular resorts as you can get, with cruising (38%) emerging as the most popular holiday for this age group.
Wherever you are heading to on holiday, it’s important to organise single-trip travel insurance in advance.
