Spain toughens car hire and rental markets

Spain1Spanish authorities have unveiled a range of measures that could make it tougher to hire vehicles and rent properties in the country.

Designed to provide security and to dampen the threat of terrorism, Home Office minister Juan Ignacio Zoido revealed that all car hire firms, estate agents and property owners will need to register client details from next year.

The measures come from the Anti-Terrorist Committee and will ultimately provide the Civil Guard and other security agencies with information on domestic and international tourists.

Spanish authorities are already clamping down on the sale of butane gas, while the sharing of passenger details on flights in and out of the country will soon be compulsory.

The Anti-Terrorist Committee was created following attacks in the summer of 2017 and the latest meeting represented the first time members have met since those atrocities.

In copycat attacks to those seen in London, Berlin and Nice, vehicles were used as deadly weapons and the Spanish authorities have now followed other European nations in taking action.

Ministers said they were appalled at the ease at which hire cars and vans could be accessed, which is why more information will now be needed.

The impact on most tourists will be minimal, but they will have to agree to the sharing of their information if they wish to hire a car.

At the same time, the process at the hire desk might take longer than previously seen, as more paperwork will be required.

The potential for new measures to tackle terrorism in Spain was first unveiled in late 2017, although it has taken until now for Mr Zoido to confirm the details.

Property rentals, such as those done through the popular website Airbnb, are also set to be covered by the new measures, meaning that authorities will have the details of all individuals that rent homes and holiday lets.

If you do intend to enjoy the flexibility that hiring a vehicle in Spain brings, you may also wish to consider car hire excess insurance.

The added extra covers the excess that you would be required to pay should the hire vehicle be damaged or stolen, and costs less than you may think.
