Changing car hire with technology?

satNav1Autonomous vehicles and those connected to the internet are in development across the world, and when released they could radically alter the car hire industry.

A prime example, recently showcased at the Hannover Messe 2018, is the DS7 Crossback from Huawei and Groupe PSA.

The car is packed with connected services, including Huawei’s Internet of Things platform and cloud services as well as Groupe PSA’s Connected Vehicle Modular Platform (CVMP).

While that might not mean much to you, it does result in a vehicle that can access a huge and diverse range of services.

These include connected navigation and natural language voice recognition, alongside a connected portal that provides details on the vehicle, how it runs and if there are any problems.

It means data on maintenance, driving history and driving styles can be recorded and accessed via a smartphone.

This could be of particular interest to car hire firms and fleet managers, as they’ll be able to monitor their vehicles constantly.

It may mean that hire cars of the future are permanently tracked, while the IoT platform will provide access to services that can enhance daily life.

A key thing to note is that all interactions between the platforms and the cloud are secure, as data is encrypted and protected.

Huawei see the technology as a way of enhancing the life of a vehicle and the cloud services on the vehicles are set to be accessible in countries where the cars are marketed – the DS7 has just launched in China for example and is the first vehicle to use the CVMP.

Leon He, Head of the Automotive Business Unit of Huawei Enterprise Business Group, said the platform will enable the development of applications and services that result in a more personalised driving experience.

He labelled the cloud as being a key part of the transformation and it is expected that numerous vehicles will be released in the coming months that have similar connected capacity.

For car hire firms, the ability to monitor their vehicles could alter how they manage their fleet of vehicles, while customers will benefit from an increased range of services.

Of course it’s important to protect yourself when you hire a vehicle, which is where car hire excess insurance can be useful.

While it is not as essential, the added extra provides protection against the excess you would need to pay in the event of a claim should your hire vehicle be damaged or stolen. Get a quote today to see how little it may cost.
