More than 4.5 million travellers to jet off on holiday over Christmas

HolidayABTA, the UK’s largest travel association, expects more than 4.5 million travellers to jet off on holiday during the festive period.

The 22nd of December is expected to be the busiest day for travel, whilst many have opted to avoid travelling on Christmas Day.

Many travellers are opting to get away from the cold weather in the UK, choosing to relax in the sun in the Canary Islands, Antalya in Turkey and Hurghada in Egypt, instead.

Austria, Italy and France are other popular destination for travellers looking for a snowy Christmas setting, with Iceland and Lapland also proving to be attractive to holidaymakers this year.

For New Year’s Eve getaways, cities such as Budapest, Barcelona, Dublin, Geneva, Amsterdam and Ney York lead the way, whilst breaks in Edinburgh and London appeal to those looking to stay closer to home.

According to ABTA, more than a million people are set to travel from Gatwick, 525,000 from Stansted, 330,000 from Luton and around 480,000 from Manchester.

Scottish airports are also expecting a large number of passengers, with 226,000 expected to travel through Edinburgh alone.

A number of travellers are also set to travel across the English Channel, either by ferry or through the Channel Tunnel, with a huge number also using the Eurostar.

However, many still plan on enjoying a break in the UK, opting for a country cottage or a seaside resort, with breaks in York proving to be particularly popular.

Abta Chief Executive Mark Tanzer said: “Christmas and New Year are always a very busy time for the travel industry with people heading off for winter sun or guaranteed snow for a truly authentic Christmas experience.”
