Google reveals the most searched holiday destinations in 2017

GoogleCape Verde was the world’s most Googled holiday destination of 2017, the global online search giant has revealed.

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Verde has grown in popularity in recent years, thanks to its picture-perfect beaches, laidback charm and stunning local cuisine.

The tech giant revealed the findings in its annual Year in Search round-up, which focuses on the year’s top trends and topics.

In 2016, the island welcomed 644,000 tourists and most of those were from the UK – Cape Verde’s biggest source market for tourism.

The Costa del Sol was named as the second most searched for destination, and it remains a firm favourite among Brits looking for a cheap break, thanks to a host of all-inclusive hotels and offers.

Santorini, Bora Bora and Sardinia, were named in third, fourth and fifth respectively, thanks to their pristine beaches and clear blue waters.

Unsurprisingly, Croatia is high in the list and has seen a huge increase in tourism in the last five years, largely thanks to its appearance in Game of Thrones and a host of budget friendly hotels.

An average flight time of just three hours, means Morocco is a popular holiday destination for Brits, who regularly enjoy the vibrant food markets.

From stunning cities like Sofia and Varna to the hotels situated on the Black Sea coast, Bulgaria has become a huge draw for British tourists.

More than 10.6 million travellers visited Bulgaria in 2016, which is an increase of 24.3% on the figure recorded in 2008.

Kate Middleton and Prince William enjoyed their honeymoon in the Seychelles, which may have resulted in a number of Google searches. However, the picturesque beaches and privacy on offer make it a hugely attractive destination for travellers anyway.

Finishing off the top 10 is Tunisia, which, despite political unrest over the past few years, is now experiencing a boom in tourism thanks to an ideal climate.
