Skiing without cover – One third of Brits go without accident insurance

Skier1Despite the obvious risk associated with skiing and snowboarding, one third of travellers have revealed that they never check whether their travel insurance policy covers winter sports.

The findings come from a new report released by Abta – the UK’s largest travel association – which expects 1.75 million Brits to enjoy a ski holiday this season.

If this figure is found to be correct, it could mean that over half a million people are enjoying winter sports without the right cover in place.

More than 2,000 adults were quizzed for the survey, which found that those over 55 are the most likely to enjoy their break without the right insurance.

Winter sports holiday have grown in popularity among those aged between 55 and 64, with Abta estimating that 238,000 enjoyed one last year.

A massive 38% of those who travel for a winter-sports holiday admitted to never checking what their travel insurance covers.

“Many holidaymakers wrongly assume they're automatically covered for winter sports as part of their travel insurance – but it is often not the case, meaning thousands of people could be heading to the slopes without any cover,” said Nikki White, director of destinations and sustainability at Abta.

Perhaps surprisingly, those aged between 18 and 24 were found to be the most prepared when it comes to checking their travel insurance, with only 14% not giving it any thought.

Although skiing is a hugely popular activity while on holiday, it has the potential to be dangerous and can leave travellers with an expensive medical bill if they did have an accident.

Between 2012 and 2016, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) reported 118 hospitalisations, highlighting the need for travellers to take out the right cover.

“We advise people of all ages to check that they are covered for everything they plan to do and have the right preparations in place to help them enjoy their time on the slopes,” continued Mrs White.
