British holidaymakers plan more travel in next three years

More than 90% of Brits are planning to expand their travel plans in the next three years, according to a survey by AITO.

The AITO Travel Insights Report 2017 revealed that 21% of respondents are planning on taking even more holidays than they do usually.

Findings from the survey show that there is still an appetite for travel despite both economic and political pressures making it more difficult.

Around 25,000 of AITO’s customer base responded to the survey, which also found that travellers are seeking a variety of experiences when they travel.

City visits remain the most popular, but trips that include wildlife, walking, culture, arts and history are also growing in popularity among travellers.

Perhaps surprisingly, beach and cruise holidays are low in interest among travellers, who now seemingly want more adventure when away.

The study also looked at traveller spending and found that 29% spent between £2,000 and £4,999 per person on their holiday, an increase of 3% on last year’s figure.

This may be down to a growing interest in long-haul trips to countries such as the USA, India and Australia, while Greece, Italy and France are popular destinations a little closer to home.

However, holidays to Iceland, Russia and China are expected to increase in the next few years, as travellers look further afield for exciting destinations.

Just 9% of respondents revealed that they get holiday inspiration from social media, while 48% chose to use brochures.

Travellers are also now more likely to book with a travel company, with many citing the collapse of Monarch as a reason.

Chairman of AITO, Derek Moore, said: “In the wake of the Monarch collapse, it’s no surprise that trust in a travel company is more vital than ever.”

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad next year, be sure to organise your specialist travel insurance in advance.
