Can travellers trust price comparison sites?

SeatCar1When booking a holiday, the vast majority of people will use comparison websites to find the best deals on flights, accommodation and any necessary insurance products. However, are they really saving us money?

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation as they believe that certain price comparison websites may actually be adding additional costs after drawing you in by showing a cheaper deal.

In some cases, the initial price that has attracted users to view the deal has been increased by up to 75%. The CMA is also concerned that customers are simply unaware of the tactics used by sites, such as ordering results based on the commission received, or advertising false discounts.

For example, some sites have been found to show a discount that isn’t actually relevant to what you were searching for, such as showing the discount for a weekend stay when actually you searched for a hotel on a Tuesday night.

Another area the CMA are going to investigate is whether or not the messages on sites, such as ‘this hotel has been viewed 60 times today’, are actually true.

Finding the best deal

Despite the CMA’s obvious concerns about the truth behind comparison site overall costs, they can still be quite useful when you are looking around for the best deal and they can give you a rough idea of what you should expect to pay for your holiday.

Even though they may display hundreds of deals, it is always worth shopping around and looking at other sites to see if you can find anything cheaper, be it accommodation, flights or car rental.

When it comes to insurance, make sure you read the small print thoroughly, especially when it comes to products such as car insurance.

Often deals will include certain exclusions that can mean if you do have an accident abroad, you may face paying a huge excess or being lumped with additional charges.

If you’re planning on travelling abroad this year, organise your travel and car insurance in advance. Get a quote today and see if you could save.
