UK visitor numbers to Sweden surge in 2017

Swedan1The number of British travellers visiting Sweden has surged this past year, thanks to new tourism and flight offerings.

Figures from Visit Sweden show that the number of British visitors between January and August reached 617,227, an increase of more than 12,000 on the same period a year previously.

During the whole of 2016, a record 857,570 visited the country and the national tourism board expects that figure to be comfortably beaten this year.

UK tourist numbers have jumped 43% from when just over 600,000 people visited in 2013 and

this substantial growth means the UK is now Sweden’s fourth largest inbound tourism market.

New air routes have recently been launched by both EasyJet and bmi regional from Luton to Stockholm and Birmingham to Gothenburg, respectively.

At the end of 2016, easyJet also launched a new route from London Gatwick to Jämtland Härjedalen in northern Sweden, which is a gateway to Sweden’s premier downhill ski resort of Åre, highlighting Brits’ thirst for new experiences in the country.

Gabriel Dorch, Marketing Manager for Visit Sweden UK, commented: “We are delighted that an increasing number of British holidaymakers are discovering Sweden. The simplicity and sense of wellbeing offered by the Swedish lifestyle appeals to UK travellers.”

He added that the tourism group has worked to promote a number of factors and lifestyle messages, featuring food, design and sustainable nature.

Having targeted the UK market as an area where considerable growth could be possible, efforts are now being made to create experiences that are tied into to those key themes.

Early this year, the tourism board launched its first online catalogue, so travel operators and travel agents have access to the latest updates regarding Sweden’s top tourist destinations.
