More than four in five of travellers willing to use digital passport

Busy1Modern passengers are willing to use more digital technology when they travel, with 82% revealing they would use a digital passport on their smartphone.

The International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) 2017Global Passenger Survey (GPS) shows that travellers are expecting more technology to be introduced in the future to give them more control of their travel.

In total, 10,675 people responded to the survey, which aimed to find out what passengers want when they travel and where improvements can be made.

The top priority among travellers was more flexibility with airport processes, as well as real-time information sent directly to passengers so they can be kept updated on any changes.

Security was also a big priority, with many revealing that they did not want to have to remove or unpack personal items, while many also want a quicker border control process.

The survey found that travellers want to be more independent when it comes to airport processes, and would prefer more control over their baggage options.

More than 65% want to tag their luggage with electronic bag-tags, whilst 48% want to be able to self-drop their bag.

Getting onto the aircraft was another area where people want more control, with 72% indicating that they would prefer to self-board.

Pierre Charbonneau, Director of Passenger and Facilitation, IATA, said: “Smartphone and tablet users want to use these mobile devices to control their travel experience. They expect easy access to the information they want, exactly when they need it in the travel process.”

Being kept up-to-date was an area where the majority of passengers are eager to see improvements, with 85% wanting to have the capability to check their flight’s status.

Text messaging continues to be the preferred option for updates among travellers, however 28% would prefer to be contacted through smartphone apps.
