Millions of Brits planning winter holiday escape

Plan1Brits have had enough of the cold weather, that’s if the 13 million people who have swapped their summer holiday plans for a winter break are anything to go by.

MyVoucherCodes.co.uk sought the opinion of 1,000 British travellers to understand more about the winter holiday period and discovered that a quarter of Brits opt for a winter break because they find Christmas ‘boring’.

Meanwhile just over 15% look to relax in a warmer climate over the festive period in order to avoid having to spend time with extended members of their family.

Three of the most popular destinations this winter for British travellers include Florida, Lanzarote and Tenerife.

Other popular choices include trips to Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and Barbados, as well as Gran Canaria, Morocco and Thailand, showing that Brits have no qualms about heading to both short and long-haul destinations.

Chris Reilly, Managing Director for MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “More Brits are flying to warmer climates over Christmas than ever before and spending more than they did in the summer.”

UK residents made 14.6 million visits abroad in the three months leading up to December 2016, an increase of 8% on the previous year, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

During this period, there was a 16% increase in trips to visit relatives and friends, whilst the overall number of holidays increased by 7%.

MyVoucherCodes.co.uk revealed earlier this month that a third of Brits – around 22 million – are expected to enjoy an overseas holiday during the winter.

More than half (58%) are more likely to book a trip over Christmas than they were five years ago, whilst 8% admitted that the pressure of hosting family during the festive period made them want to go on holiday.

Other reasons to travel during winter include escaping the winter weather, with around 40% citing the cold as the main reason for booking during the festive season.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this winter, make sure you organise your family travel insurance in advance.
