Trying new foods tops travellers list of priorities

Dinner1Brits are a nation of foodies, as trying new cuisines is the main activity travellers want to do on holiday, according to a new poll commissioned by Virgin Holidays.

Trying new food dishes was the top priority among all age groups, ahead of the more traditional experiences such as whale watching, a helicopter ride over a natural wonder like the Grand Canyon, and driving a classic or luxury car.

The poll – which sought the opinions of 2,000 holidaymakers – also found that travellers only start making the most of their holidays at the age of 31, as many get bored of booze-filled breaks and late nights and opt for more relaxing escapes.

Interestingly, six in ten of those surveyed over the age of 31 revealed they had returned home from holiday feeling like they had not been away at all.

Those polled between the ages of 18 and 29 revealed that getting a tan was their top priority, while 29% were going away for the vibrant nightlife on offer.

It is once travellers get over the age of 30 when their preferences change, with 27% going away to do as little as possible and a quarter happy if they get a chance to read a book.

Joe Thompson, Managing Director at Virgin Holidays, said: “It’s apparent we all want different things from our getaways and there is no one-size fits all when it comes to travelling.”

As travellers reach their forties, many simply want to get off the beaten track and explore, while two in five prefer a city break for their holiday.

Three in ten over sixty-year olds are eager to meet interesting people while away, and the age group is also the biggest advocates for multiple destination travel, including cruises and tours.
