Visitor spending in the UK grew by £872 million in 2016

Stonehenge1The UK saw an additional £872 million of visitor spending last year, according to new figures from VisitBritain/VisitEngland.

The national tourism agency revealed that there has been a strong level of inbound tourism in their 2016-17 annual review, with a record 23.1 million overseas trips to the UK made in January to July this year.

When compared to the same period last year, the number increased by almost 8%, whilst visitor spending rose 9% to £13.3 billion.

Overseas visits to the UK are expected to reach 39.7 million this year, increasing by 6% on 2016, with spending rising to £25.7 billion.

The number of domestic overnight holidays in England increased by 7%, revealing a growing trend of staycations amongst British travellers.

“Tourism is an economic powerhouse, worth £127 billion annually to the economy and a job creator right across Britain,” said BTA chairman Steve Ridgway.

Despite the continued success of tourism within the UK, Mr Ridgway believes there is still a need to continue to invest in world-class tourism products and infrastructure to make travelling easier.

A popular option is to hire a motor home or campervan, as it enables Brits to explore the country at their own pace – however those that do are encouraged to consider motor home excess insurance to ensure they are covered should something go awry.

Over the course of this summer there has been a record-breaking number of inbound visits and spend, which highlights the success of the UK’s tourist attractions.

The strong summer builds on a record breaking 2016, when Britain welcomed 37.6 million visitors, who spent around £22.5 billion in total – up 2% on 2015.

“Internationally we are performing strongly in a hugely competitive market and I will continue to work closely with the sector to maintain growth, get the best possible deal as we exit the EU and retain the UK’s position as the must-visit destination,” said Tourism minister John Glen.
